WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?

Every once in a while, a wave of really good music from various artists pop up on my radar and it’s too addictive to keep to myself. I’d be depriving the world of good music if I didn’t do my part and share the music. It’s really all Korean pop, but infused with a worldly charm to it. Take a look:

1. MFBTY

From left: Tiger JK, Yoon Mi Rae, Bizzy

Majorly obsessed with MFBTY. They’re the real pioneers of hip hop in South Korea and their music really transcends language barriers. It’s made up of Bizzy and the married couple Yoon Mi Rae and Tiger JK.  They also have the cutest child Jordan, who’s a music prodigy in the making.

Tiger JK also released a classic song in 2009 that’s still really popular with an evergreen sick opening beat. Check it out here:

2.  Park Jin Young.

An esteemed music producer known for his legendary “half air, half sound” singing technique, this musical genius also owns the entertainment company JYP, home to famous artistes like 2PM, Miss A, 2AM, GOT7 and former home to the world star Rain! He recently released a new single featuring the Jessi of Lucky J. I wasn’t too taken with the song concept at first (check it out and you’ll see), but I found it stuck in my head for weeks after.

3. SNSD

From left: Seohyun, Hyoyeon, Jessica, Yuri, Yoona, Tiffany, Sunny, Sooyoung and Taeyeon

Ahh, the reigning queens of Kpop. Along with their company SM Entertainment, these 8 (previously 9) warriors have forged ahead and made a name for themselves and kpop worldwide. They’ve held sold out concerts at the Tokyo Dome as well as the Staples Center in L.A. They’ve sold countless albums and singles worldwide with an impressive fanclub of Sones. Their name is synonymous with Kpop itself and it’s not hard to see why with these two songs that I’ve been obsessed with:

4. Gain

Gain of the Brown Eyed Girls has established herself as a soloist and with her newest single “Paradise Lost”, it cements her spot at the top of the charts. The music video is sultry and sexy with a seductively catchy tune. In line with her album title “Hawwah” which refers to Eve, the music video is resplendent with snakes, elaborate golden sets and dramatic organ sounds, it draws you in. Her style in the video also sparked major followers, with extravagantly jeweled leotards and loose glitter pieces as eye shadow.

Note:  She also released an equally steamy single appropriately titled “Fxxk You” and she’s currently dating the male lead in her video!!

5. Kangnam

Kangnam’s a bit of a dark horse. He is the vocalist of his hip hop group M.I.B. and shot like a firework to fame in the reality show “I Live Alone” where he revealed that he had only $3 in his bank account, a reminder that showbiz isn’t all fame and luxury and that entertainers have to work tirelessly before making their big break. Kangnam finally saw the fruit of his labors towards the end of 2014, four years after his debut, hitting a year-end festival stage as an MC, as part of the “Lucky Boys” project for 2014 SBS Gayo Daejun. Since then, he’s been in various variety shows and his recent song “Delicious”, which was the OST for the popular drama Let’s Eat Season 2 starring Yoon DooJoon of B2ST (<3) is light, refreshing and incorporates lots of food names which I adore.
